Super-awesome new Gmail feature

If you use Google's Gmail, check out the experimental Google Labs settings. There are several cool options, but I turned on the newest one right away: the Forgotten Attachment Detector.

"Many of us have experienced the embarrassment of having sent a message without attaching the file we said we were going to attach," writes author John Kotker. "Turn on the Forgotten Attachment Detector in Labs, and you'll get an alert if you mention attaching a file but forget to do so."

That's a small little bit of awesomeness added to my day. (Via Steve Rubel.)

Thanks for the tip! Why, earlier today I sent a message sans attachment and then had to send the "oops" message right after!

I agree! I saw it and went an enabled it right away too. I love gmail...and google reader!

You know what else would be great would be a similar feature for links. I don't know how many times I forgot to paste a link in after I say that I am sending a link....

I love Google, and GMail, but this really isn't that great IMO. If you're forgetting attachments when sending email you've probably got more important things you should be worried about.
I love their innovation and Labs stuff, I just wish it were a little more useful, more . . . innovative.

People write email quickly, and even I, who has been using email and writing etiquette articles and advice about it for decades, still forget attachments sometimes. It's so common I'm just pleased the Google team thought to try something.

There are things than need to improve about Gmail, but what's nice is that when it does improve, it Just Happens, and none of us using it need to do anything but keep going to the website.

By the way, make sure you activate the "Always Use HTTPS" setting so that your Gmail messages are always encrypted.

Oh, GMail, how I love thee!

Great tip, Derek! I have sent emails sans attachment dozens of times. I hate doing that!

Great stuff. I beg anyone on the dev team who reads this - can we please have teh contact list sort by last name??? Thanks.

Derek - I enabled HTTPS as you suggested but then gmail notifier did not work. Do you know why?

I don't use the notifier, so I don't know, unfortunately.
