One of First Earth Panoramas from Space, 1948Again via Tony, here are the first-ever photos from space taken by automated cameras aboard captured German V-2 rockets fired by the U.S. military in New Mexico in 1946.

There is a panorama from a couple of years later that shows a huge swath of the earth, from Mexico and the Sea of Cortez to Albuquerque. Pretty amazing stuff for a decade before Sputnik.
