A and MEight is a significant age—in our society, you're no longer a little child. You're most of the way to ten, closer to puberty than to diapers, starting to learn some actual math and reading books without pictures in them. You look out for your younger siblings.

Our oldest daughter turned eight today, and all those things are true for her. This year she will get to visit Hawaii and fly on a plane for the first time. She is a great girl, on the way to becoming a fabulous woman like her mother. Happy birthday, M.
